OVERVIEW:
The Shasta-Tehama-Trinity Joint Community College District (Shasta College) sits at the northern end of the Sacramento Valley, surrounded by mountains to the north, east, and west. DESCRIPTION OF BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides technical support for the ongoing administrative and instructional efforts of Shasta College, its students, faculty and staff. The Systems Engineer participates as a member of a technology team, focusing on the day to day operation and support of servers, and networking equipment including but not limited to switches, routers, and wireless networking equipment. The Systems Engineer works under the guidance of the Senior Systems Engineer to ensure the district's network and server infrastructure meets the needs of our users. This position may direct the activities of other technical support staff that perform hardware, software, peripheral, lab and/or classroom, or other voice/data/video/telecom support activities.

CLASSIFICATION: Range 45 on the current Classified Salary Schedule, 40 hours per week, 12 months per year. Work assignment hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

SUPERVISOR: Director of Systems Engineering or designee

Typical Duties, Knowledge and Ability
Essential Functions:

Essential and marginal function statements and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Perform day to day operation of servers and network equipment. This includes:
    • Managing virtual and physical servers including creating virtual machines, performing software installation, and working to keep servers up to date.
    • Install networking equipment including new switches, and wireless access points.
    • Performing network switch configurations and other day to day switch management tasks.
  • Under direction of the Senior Systems Engineer, assist in evaluating and implementing new technologies and products.
  • May be asked to assist the Senior Systems Engineer to assist with major upgrades or
  • equipment installations including some work outside normal business hours.
  • Work with the Senior Systems Engineer to ensure appropriate security practices are being followed in regard to the districts data, servers, and networking equipment.
  • Develop and maintains complete and accurate records pertaining to hardware, software, system, and network configurations, changes, outages and improvement plans.
  • Develop and maintains favorable relationships with other technicians, faculty, staff and students as well as counterparts in other academic institutions, vendors, communications network service providers, and state and local regulatory agencies.
  • Ensure compliance with software licensing and copyright laws and network, system, and environment warranty agreements.
  • Troubleshoot, resolve and document technical problems/difficulties with our ability to deliver services to students, faculty and/or staff.
  • Work with all levels of faculty, staff, and student workers.
  • May direct the work of other technical support staff.
Marginal Functions:

  • Provide assistance and counsel to faculty and staff pertaining to their computing needs.
  • Secure network and computer equipment as appropriate; monitor access.
  • Provide technical advisement and training of other staff members as necessary.
  • Work with students to enhance their learning experiences in the area of computer and network systems.
  • Participate in the establishment, enforcement and updating of network computing standards, policies, procedures, and use guidelines.
  • Perform other related duties similar to the above in scope and function as required.
Knowledge of:
  • Requisite technical skills to perform essential and marginal job functions.
  • Operating principles and characteristics of LAN/WAN, telecommunications, WiFi, client server environments and personal computing hardware utilized by the College.
  • Knowledge and experience in the following technologies:
    • Server Virtualization
    • Network switching and routing
    • Data backup solutions
    • Cloud computing resources such as Azure and Amazon Web Services
    • Office 365
  • Troubleshooting tools for desktops, servers, and network equipment not limited to but including switches, and routers.
  • Knowledge and experience working with desktop and server operating systems including Windows and Linux.
  • Methods and procedures of standardizing, securing, maintaining, and operating computers and peripheral equipment an enterprise environment.
  • Support techniques in a networked environment (e.g. TCP/IP, DNS, WINS, DHCP, configuration and troubleshooting).
  • Software License compliance laws and methodologies.
  • Security and business continuity (disaster recovery and backup) planning and execution.
  • Troubleshooting, diagnostic techniques, procedures, equipment and tools used in computer and peripheral repair.
  • Technology documentation and presentation techniques.
Ability to:
  • Plan, schedule and perform simple and complex customer support activities in an organized manner
  • Maintain current knowledge of technical advances in all areas of responsibility
  • Keep detailed, precise records and handle correspondence effectively
  • Work and communicate effectively and cooperatively with students, faculty, and staff

Experience/Education
Education Required:

  • AA degree with coursework in computer and network systems and technologies, plus substantial continued education and training in the Information Technology field, OR equivalent experience in the field.
  • Bachelor's degree and relevant industry certifications and training preferred.
Experience Required:
  • Minimum of two years professional experience directly supporting networks and servers.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge and ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students, as well as staff members and students with physical and/or learning disabilities.
Experience Preferred:
  • Four years' experience with progressively higher responsibilities preferred.
  • Ability to produce and clearly explain LAN documentation preferred.
