Job Description
The Department of Occupational Therapy invites applications for a part-time, salaried Lecturer to lead the department's level I fieldwork. The Department of Occupational Therapy is part of a vibrant academic and research community within Boston University's College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences: Sargent College, which is one of the country's leading schools of health and rehabilitation sciences. Home to more than 1300 undergraduate and 450 graduate students, Sargent College combines outstanding faculty and cutting-edge research to provide superb education and clinical experiences. The college has more than 25 on-campus research facilities, clinical centers, and labs. It offers top-ranked degree programs in occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech, language and hearing sciences, health science, athletic training, human physiology, behavior and health, and nutrition.

This is a part-time (50%) faculty role that is renewable, non-tenure track, 9-month appointment that will begin in the summer of 2023. The initial term will be two years and is renewable based on performance and continued availability of funding. Candidates should be aware that there are job responsibilities each summer, beginning in August. The part-time lecturer will teach OT501 Integrative Seminar II & LIFW and OT502 Integrative Seminar III and LIFW each academic year. OTA successful candidate will have an established career in Occupational Therapy and demonstrated skills in clinical supervision of doctoral level trainees.

The Academic Level I Fieldwork Coordinator provides comprehensive planning, direction, instruction, and evaluation for the Level I clinical education program within the OTD professional curriculum, incorporating the mission and goals of Sargent College, the Department of Occupational Therapy, professional accreditation standards, and generally accepted norms in higher education. The Academic Level I Fieldwork Coordinator reports to the Program Director of the entry-level OTD program. The Academic Level I Fieldwork Coordinator is a 50%-time position.

The Academic Level I Fieldwork Coordinator:

I. Serves as a liaison between the academic institution and the affiliating clinical facilities

  • Identify placements for L1FW students and match students to sites based on experience type, student preferences, transportation, and various other factors.
  • Collaborates with BU Sargent College's Clinical Education Services office to communicate information from the academic institution to the fieldwork facility
  • Communicates with fieldwork educators (supervisors) and students while students are completing Level 1 placements to assess student performance as needed. Reviews final evaluations of student performance and student evaluation of the experience. Provides guidance and support as required.
  • Evaluates each fieldwork site through student feedback/ratings.
  • Coordinates the collection of pertinent information from students' performance and experiences at affiliated fieldwork sites and disseminates to faculty during curricular review processes as appropriate.
  • Arranges on-site visits to clinical sites as needed to discuss pertinent issues with the student and supervisor, and/or, related to development of the student fieldwork program.
  • Serves as a resource person for the fieldwork education community.


II. Oversees the preparation, assignment, and supervision of OTD students while on Level I fieldwork placements

  • Teaches OT501 Integrative Seminar II & LIFW and OT502 Integrative Seminar III and LIFW each academic year.
  • Prepares students for fieldwork placements. In collaboration with BU Sargent College's Clinical Education Services office, informs students of clinical education policies and procedures, supplies relevant fieldwork site information, counsels students on personal objectives and fieldwork performance as needed, and prepares fieldwork assignment schedule.
  • Monitors academic performance and professional behavior of students, in conjunction with faculty, to ensure that they meet the criteria for participation in Level I fieldwork placements.
  • Records, assesses, and follows-up as appropriate on the evaluation of student performance while on Level I fieldwork.
  • Utilizes coaching intervention strategies with the fieldwork educator (supervisor) for students demonstrating difficulties while on Level I fieldwork placement. Develops remedial experiences for students if necessary. Confers with appropriate faculty and advisors and other appropriate individuals, when applicable.
  • Provides feedback to the AFWC on the evaluation of fieldwork education policies and procedures; identifies and recommends development of and/or change in Level I fieldwork education policy and procedures.
  • Coordinates the development and ongoing evaluation of Level I fieldwork education assessment forms and materials.
  • Collaborates with instructors of Integrative Seminars (OT 500, 501, 502, 530) to ensure that students' learning outcomes for Level I fieldwork are congruent with objectives of the course, attend seminars as needed throughout the semester
  • Provides feedback to the AFWC to ensure fieldwork program compliance with appropriate (Level I fieldwork) ACOTE C-standards.
  • Coordinates with Academic Level II Fieldwork Coordinator to:
    • Ensure same-site requirements are met
    • Ensure that students have Level I Fieldwork placements in settings that support, enhance, or complement their Level II placements as appropriate/needed.


III. Recruits and develops Level I fieldwork sites

  • Works with Clinical Education Services Office staff to maintain documentation on newly developing sites, or sites being reactivated' for a student assignment.
  • Completes fieldwork site visits to new and established sites to develop/maintain relationships with student coordinators and fieldwork educators (site supervisors) and ensure their qualifications as fieldwork educators and the quality of the fieldwork experience, a minimum of 5 each semester.
  • Identifies and/or responds to identification of new fieldwork sites by following through as appropriate. Provides information and support to facilities starting new Level I fieldwork programs.
  • Maintains an adequate number of Level I fieldwork sites, in terms of quality, quantity, and scope of practice to meet the Level I fieldwork education needs of the program.


IV. Encourages and supports fieldwork educator professional development

  • Collaborates with New England Occupational Therapy Educational Council (NEOTEC) member school representatives to plan and offer an annual conference for fieldwork educator training.
  • Participates in local, state, and international forums or programs designed to foster fieldwork education.


V. Contributes to Program Related Activities/Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the Chair, OTD Program Director, Level II Fieldwork Coordinator, faculty and staff, provides feedback for the program's compliance with ACOTE fieldwork standards. Ensures that the fieldwork program reflects the sequence and scope of content in the curriculum design in collaboration with faulty so that fieldwork experiences strengthen the ties between didactic and fieldwork education.
  • Actively participates in activities of NEOTEC.
  • Participates in regional, state, and national fieldwork activities and programs.
  • Participates in college-level activities pertaining to clinical education.
  • Makes recommendations to the Chair/Program Director regarding fieldwork education
  • Provides input into the preparation of accreditation documentation and program evaluation data, re outcome assessment of students in the program.
  • Attend OT Department faculty meetings as needed when discussions include LIFW
  • Review applications for admission
  • Guest lecture in OT Department courses (~3 lectures per semester)
  • Supervise Level I and Level II placements in community settings (up to 8 hours a week for supervision from January through April)


Required Skills
Qualifications include:

  • A masters or doctoral degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Strong communication skills and an administrative skill set.
