Job Description
The Animal Science Center is part of the Office of Research, a group dedicated to aiding the research community in navigating the lifecycle of their work, from finding funding to creating proposals to helping inventions find their way to the public.

Our mission is to ensure while aiding in academic studies, that animal care, health and welfare is maintained at the highest standards according to Institutional, local, state, and federal regulations, policies and procedures.

To accomplish this goal, this candidate would complete daily quality animal care for all housed research animals in the USDA facility, such as primates, chinchillas, rabbits, as well as other species when needed. The candidate's assignments would include animal husbandry tasks such as cage changing, animal health checks, veterinary health monitoring and treatment, cage wash, and facility maintenance i.e. sanitization of equipment, research housing areas and materials. Additional responsibilities include animal receiving and housing, census data collection, and others as assigned.

Animal Science Center is looking for a candidate who is ready to work in a dynamic, positive work environment surround by likeminded individuals. Someone who can complete assignments independently and as a whole. An ideal candidate would be eager to learn and can affectively communicate via email, text, call through smartphone and computers. Skills such as accurate recording keeping and detail oriented would be desirable for this position. This candidate would be professional and courteous while building working relationships with researchers, veterinary staff, and co-workers.

Required Skills
  • High school diploma or GED
  • 1 year previous experience working with USDA animals is strongly preferred
  • ALAT certification preferred

  1. Physical ability to lift, vision, and auditory requirement: 50 lbs & Vision and Hearing within normal parameters
  2. Walking and Standing: 2-4 hours at one time & 6-8 hours per day
  3. Bending and Twisting Neck: 2-4 hours at one time & 6-8 hours per day
  4. Bending and Twisting Back: 2-4 hours at one time & 6-8 hours per day
  5. Squatting : < than .5 hour at a time & < than 1 hour per day
  6. Kneeling : < than .5 hour at a time & < than 1 hour per day
  7. Repetitive Hand Movement
  8. Simple Grasping: Both Hands: 2-4 hours at one time & 6-8 hours per day
  9. Power Grasping: Both Hands: < than .5 hour at a time & 1-2hour per day
  10. Fine Manipulation: 1 Hand: < than .5 hour at a time & < than 1 hour per day
  11. Pushing/Pulling: Both Hands: < than .5 hour at a time & 2-4hour per day
  12. Reaching above shoulder height: 2-4 hrs at one time & 4-6 hours per day
  13. Reaching below shoulder height: 2-4 hours at one time & 4-6 hours per day
  14. Reaching/Trunk Rotation above shoulder height: 2-4 hrs at one time & 4-6 hours per day


Complete Initial Health Questionnaire

Complete OSHA Respiratory Medical Evaluation Questionnaire

TB skin test within past year / TB skin test within past 6 months if working with NHPs

Proof of two Measles, Mumps, or Rubella or positive measles titer

Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (TDAP) if not vaccinated within past 10 years

Functional capacity evaluation - A functional capacity evaluation is set of tests, practices and observations that are combined to determine the ability of the evaluated person to function in a variety of circumstances, most often employment, in an objective manner.

Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
